Ottawa, June 8, 2016 - Equiterre welcomed today the announcement by Ontario Environment Minister Glen Murray of its Climate Change plan 2016-2020. The plan will provide investment of more than $8 billion and aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by almost 10 million tonnes annually,, the equivalent of removing 2.3 million cars from Ontario roads.
"As the federal government, provinces and territories work on what will be our national climate plan, Ontario leads by example by unveiling its plan today» said Steven Guilbeault, Senior Director of Equiterre. "Measures such as "net zero" homes, the creation of a green bank and its Green Energy Act are at the forefront of climate policy in Canada and even in the North America. Let's hope other jurisdictions will follow suit " he added.
"We do, however, think that the target of expanding electric vehicle sales to 5% of all vehicles sold by 2020,is far too low," said Sidney Ribaux, Executive Director of Equiterre. "Today, Norway is already at 33% and Califronia at 15%, we believe that Ontario can and should be more ambitious".
The Government of Ontario plans to cut GHG pollution to 15% below 1990 levels by 2020, 37% by 2030 and 80% by 2050.
