With a psychology degree and international cooperation certificate under her belt, Christina Popescu wanted to further explore her interests. She first became interested in the environment as a teenager, collecting newspaper clippings on global warming and pollution. After starting a master’s in political science and keen to get directly involved in an area close to her heart, Christina volunteered to help promote Équiterre organic baskets at various events.
She also wanted to understand how a non-governmental organization works, so began volunteering at the reception desk. A few months later, she applied for an internship in renewable energies, which involved researching hydrokinetic power and documenting her findings in practical fact sheets. For her, it was “such a rewarding experience.”
For this inquisitive student, always keen to develop her critical thinking skills, the internship was a wonderful opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge on one of her passions, without having to take further studies. But Christina was hooked and soon enrolled in an online sustainable development course.
The environment: a confirmed passion!
Christina really enjoyed working in a non-profit organization. The way the work is organized, the team’s commitment, the stimulating projects and autonomy given—she could see herself working here. “I wanted to experience working in this kind of environment and see if I could manage. The internship totally confirmed my passion for the environment and working in an organization like Équiterre.”
Christina now intends to focus on her master’s thesis on farmland grabbing in West Africa. She’s added an environmental twist by addressing global warming in the present day and how it’s affecting local populations. Her plans for the future? “Once I finish my thesis, I’d like to keep working for the environment. I won’t be far from Équiterre, that’s for sure.”
