Our recommendations for Quebec's Sustainable Mobility Policy

Published on

You may have heard that Quebec is replacing its Public Transit Policy with a new Sustainable Mobility Policy. Groups across the province made suggestions for the plan during public consultations earlier this year. Here is what we had to say.

Quebec needs:

  • a more coherent approach to land use and transportation
  • to invest more in public transit, prioritizing sources of funding with a high level of social support
  • more cooperation between the province and municipalities regarding roads and public transit
  • to put the brakes on highway development
  • to transition to a green economy through the electrification of transportation and the adoption of low carbon fuel standards
  • better recognition of car sharing

Quebec also needs to remember its commitments to:

  • reduce its dependence on oil by 30% by 2020 and by 60% by 2030
  • reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% to 25% below 1990 levels by 2020

To reflect these goals, the new Sustainable Mobility Policy will need:

  • concrete actions
  • adequate funding
