Équiterre is Quebec’s most important and influential environmental organization. With 130,000 followers, 20,000 members, 200 volunteers and a staff of 40, the non-profit presently has offices in Montreal, Quebec City and Ottawa. Senior Communications Officer

Reporting to the Director of Communications, the successful candidate will be responsible for planning, organizing, and coordinating various projects aiming to enhance Équiterrre’s reputation and visibility among english-speaking audiences.

The successful candidate should have the ability to carry out communication projects for a range of audiences, from strategy development to the deployment of communication tools.


  • Participate in the development and the implementation of the communication and public relations plans and on the establishment of a communication strategy designed for English-speaking audiences;
  • Develop and implement effective and innovative external communication strategies in order to initiate, develop, and maintain relationships and partnerships with media organizations, educational institutions and other groups;
  • Develop and implement proactive outreach strategies for English-language media, including the preparation of press releases, the organization of press conferences, and all other media activities;
  • Create and produce communication, promotion and awareness-raising tools such as: newsletters, briefs, reports, letters, fact sheets, blogs, etc.;
  • Support Équiterre's community manager by producing English-language content for social media;
  • Help with the linguistic revision of memoirs and the translation of various texts;
  • Consistently monitor current issues, press reviews and trends in Quebec’s anglophone community.
  • Carry out all other tasks relating to the candidate’s area of expertise, according to the organization’s priorities.


  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism;
  • 7 years of experience and at least 3 in a similar role;
  • Proven ability to generate media coverage;
  • Superior writing skills in English;
  • Capacity to communicate in French orally and in writing;
  • Demonstrate sound judgment, strategic thinking and the ability to analyze and synthesize effectively;
  • Demonstrate independence, initiative and attention to detail;
  • Ability to manage a heavy workload and handle a variety of tasks;
  • Extensive network of contacts in Quebec and Ottawa media is an asset;
  • Knowledge of political issues relating to the environment, energy, and climate change is an asset;
  • Knowledge of Quebec’s English-speaking communities and English-language media;
  • Strong interest in Équiterre’s mission with knowledge of the organization’s priority issues.


  • Permanent full-time position, based in Montréal or Ottawa;
  • Flexible schedule, 34 hours/week, evening and weekend availability occasionally required;
  • Salary in accordance with the organization’s pay scale, depending on the candidate’s training and experience;
  • Five weeks’ vacation + 2 weeks off during the holiday season;
  • Group RRSP and group insurance plan;
