You are eagerly awaiting the arrival of your first summer basket.
In the meantime, is there a way to eat fresh, local food?
Fortunately, yes.
Here is a list of 10 products that are currently or will soon be available in Quebec.
Good news after a winter that did not seem to want to end.
If in the coming weeks, you don't see these products in your local grocery store, speak to the staff to let them know that you would be delighted for them to carry more local products.
- Fiddleheads – This delicacy of the eastern states and provinces is currently in season in Quebec. But act quickly, the season is very short!
- Asparagus – Quebec asparagus will soon be on the market. Yum!
- Radish – This cruciferous usually makes its appearance around May.
- Mushrooms – Local varieties are actually available year round in Quebec.
- Rhubarb – We start to see local rhubarb in spring, but must wait until June and the arrival of strawberries to make strawberry-rhubarb pie.
- Lettuce – Some varieties are available as early as the beginning of June, just when we are starting to crave a good salad.
- Spinach – Ditto for spinach.
- Green onions – A garnish extraordinaire.
- Arugula – This leafy green can be served in salads or on pizza or pasta. It can even make a good pesto. Viva the Mediterranean diet!
- Baby turnips – Baby turnips are white and similar in shape to radishes. They have a mild favour and are best served raw.
Bon appétit!
