Lock Down : The end of growth on the tar sands

The oil industry has set expansion goals that, if reached, would see production soar from about 2.1 million barrels per day (mbpd) today to 4.7 mbpd by 2030, and to as much as 5.8 mbpd by 2035.

The report, based on a comprehensive model of the North American pipeline system, shows the impact of widespread public opposition to tar sands expansion and pipelines. This growing opposition is due in large part to the devastating impacts of the tar sands sector on the climate and Canada’s ability to due its fair share for a safer climate future. The report was prepared by Oil Change International with the support of the Natural Resources Defense Council, Sierra Club U.S., Équiterre, Environmental Defence, 350.org, Bold Nebraska, and the Institute for Energy Economics & Financial Analysis.
