Petition

Publié le

Each and every one of us can help fight climate change! Citizens need to send a clear message to our future leaders until 2015, year of the federal elections in Canada. We need to say loud and clear that climate inaction has lasted long enough.

With your motivation and energy, Equiterre will build a true social movement by collecting 150 000 signatures for the No to Tar Sands petition until 2015. This petition asks to reject the proposed TransCanada Energy East project until proof has been made beyond a doubt that it is safe, that it does not increase Canada's greenhouse gas emissions, and that it will have no environmental impact for communities.

This petition and others in Canada (The Council of Canadians, Lead Now, Coule pas chez nous, Environmental Defence) intend to raise awareness amongst citizens, governments, and organisations about the harmful consequences of the Energy East project of TransCanada. With your help we hope that the voice of citizens will be heard during the federal elections of 2015.

LETS CHANGE THE WORLD ONE SIGNATURE AT A TIME!

Sign the petition No to Tar Sands and spread the news throughout your network by following four simple steps:

1. Share the petition with your social network
  • Share the petition on Facebook or Twitter!
  • Share these memes (.zip file) with your network!
  • Download the petition here (paper version) and invite your friends to sign it!
  • Transfer this message (Word) to your Email contacts.
2. Become an ambassador for the petition

Why become an ambassador?

Do you need an oil sands reality check? Few Canadians are aware of the consequences of the tar sands exploitation and its risky transport. Help us spread the word about the very real challenges related to tar sands and build a social movement for a society that is sustainable and fair.

What does an ambassador do?

Personalise your actions: help grow the movement, either on the online platform Cauzio or by printing the petition (paper version) here.

  1. Fix yourself a Challenge! Fix a target for reaching signatures (or designate a special group of people that you would like to make aware of the issue) in a certain time period (we propose to start off with an easy-to-reach goal and step up your game later on).

  2. Choosing the time period for your challenge: Choose a special moment in the year (before Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.) or even later on: You could use the petition as a tool to convince local politicians of the importance of the issue. In this case, find the days of municipal council meetings, meet your local representatives, choose one of the municipal council meetings and invite all the people that signed the petition to join. Their signatures can be used to support an action demanding your municipality to take a resolution against the TransCanada Energy East project. Equiterre would be proud to include your town in this list of resolutions on our website.

  3. Think of different ways to collect signatures: participate in a community event, join a movie night, go and collect signatures in the street, or set up an information booth at your local grocer (with their agreement). The petition is an means to raise awareness in your community about the risks related to this project. .

  4. Use your creativity to inspire your supporters (“If I reach my goal I will take a photo of myself in a costume, … I will invite you all for cocktails at my place, … I will organise a picnic in our local park, etc.… “)

  5. Don’t hesitate to include us in the process: Equiterre can send you flyers to distribute amongst your friends, colleagues, in a park, or when going door-to-door. If you organize a public event we will be happy to promote it in our network.

  6. On your ambassador page on Cauzio you will see the real-time effects of your labour: each new signatory will add to your personal progress bar as well as to the overall progress bar of the petition. If collecting signatures on paper, don’t forget to send them to us at:
    Equiterre
    Centre for Sustainable Development
    50 Ste-Catherine St. West, suite 340
    Montreal, Quebec H2X 3V4

3. Participate in the urban awareness brigades

This fall, Equiterre is searching for voluntaries in order to form urban brigades that want to help raise awareness in Quebec’s cities. If you are interested, send us an email at: mobilisation@equiterre.org. At any time, you can also join one of the Equiterre action groups!

4. Give us the means to do more

By donating to Equiterre you give us the possibility to speak in your name and to defend our common values.
