African leaders challenge Canada to fight climate change, drop tar sands

Published on

In a full page ad in the Globe and Mail, Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu and other African leaders called for Canada to take a leadership role in the fight against climate change.

They contrast the positive role Canada played in the fight against apartheid – as one of the first western countries to impose sanctions – with its lackluster efforts now in the fight against climate change:

You were once considered a leader on global issues like human rights and environmental protection. Today you're home to polluting tar sands oil, speeding the dangerous effects of climate change. For us in African, climate change is a life and death issue. By dramatically increasing Canada's global warming pollution...tar sands mining and drilling...exposes millions of Africans to more devastating drought and famine today and in the years to come.
