Oil exploration on Anticosti, a pipeline port in Cacouna, pipeline projects galore...

It seems that each day we hear about a new project with a huge environmental impact.

No wonder so many different kinds of groups are speaking out.

On May 12, four trade unions joined five environmental groups, including Equiterre, to ask the Couillard government to fullfill its commitment to hold a strategic environmental assessment on hydrocarbon development before drilling anywhere, including on Anticosti.

On May 10, thousands of people took part in hundreds of events across Canada for Defend Our Climate Day. In Quebec, residents of Sherbrooke, Quebec City, Chicoutimi, Cacouna and Montreal called for a model of prosperity that does not come at the expense of the earth. Rower Mylène Paquette joined with citizens, environmental and First Nations groups to speak out against the transportation of oil by pipeline, which could impact such marine animals as belugas.

On March 13, Equiterre launched its Say No to Tar Sands petition. More than 25,000 people have already signed. Have you? (In French only.)

Join the movement

Here's what you can do:

  • Take part in one of the legs of the Marche des Peuples pour la Terre Mère. This 700-km long, 34-day walk along the proposed route of TransCanada's Energy East pipeline started in Cacouna on May 10 and ends near Montreal in Kanesatake (Oka) on June 14. A great way to show your opposition to tar sands pipelines and hydrocarbon development in Quebec.
  • Sign and share the Say No to Tar Sands petition (in French only). Our goal is to gather more than 150,000 signatures to make it clear to the federal government that Quebecers oppose dirty oil.
  • If you speak French, watch Dominic Champagne's film, Anticosti : La chasse au pétrole extrême
  • Donate to Equiterre to give us the means to continue to fight this battle on behalf of future generations.
