We've prepared an accountability report assessing Council of the Federation compliance with existing climate change and energy commitments.

Although the provinces and territories have kept some of the promises they've made over the years, they have not kept them all. Should we start with the good news or the bad news?

What they are doing right

They were all able to offer initiatives of their own to help homeowners renovate when the federal government announced that it was ending its ecoENERGY Retrofit – Homes program (which has since been reinstated).

What they are doing wrong

They have failed to make climate change a central and ongoing agenda item at Council meetings.

What is the Council of the Federation?

It is a group for the premiers from all of Canada's provinces and territories. It meets at least once a year for discussions. The latest meeting is in Vancouver, July 20-22.

We are closely observing the meeting for any new climate change or energy commitments, but in the future we hope that the Council will report on its own progress.
