Have you ever wondered what makes a green building green? A new discovery centre proposes to answer this question.
The Centre d'interprétation sur le bâtiment durable is located in Equiterre's new shared headquarters, the Centre for Sustainable Development (better known by its official name, the Maison du développement durable), a demonstration green building in Montreal's entertainment district.
Members of the public are invited to:
- drop by for a free self-guided tour using interactive terminals
- reserve online for a free guided tour *
You will learn what makes the Maison du développement durable one of the most environmentally and socially reponsible buildings in Quebec, including such features as:
- a five-storey living wall designed to act as a natural air filter
- an eco-bannister made with century-old logs recovered from the bottom of the Georgian Bay
- countertops made from recycled glass
- experimental concrete
- raised floor heating
- light-weight elevators
- a rainwater recovery system
- a geothermal heating and cooling system
- sustainable, sound-absorbent artwork made from organic materials using traditional artisanal methods
