Petition: Say no to tar sands

Published on

Now available in English.

More than 40,000 Quebecers have signed our petition opposing the proposed TransCanada Energy East pipeline. Now you can, too!

What is TransCanada's Energy East Pipeline?

This pipeline would carry 1.1 million barrels of crude oil a day from Western Canada to Saint John, New Brunswick.

The project includes:

  • converting an existing natural gas pipeline to carry crude oil from Alberta and Saskatchewan to Ontario
  • building a new pipeline from Cornwall, Ontario through Quebec to New Brunswick

It also involves building an oil port in Cacouna in the Bas-Saint-Laurent.

At 4,400 km in length, it would be the largest pipeline project in North America.

Nothing to gain, everything to lose

TransCanada's Energy East project:

  • Will not save you money at the pump. Instead, oil companies will pocket extra profits.
  • Is about getting oil to foreign markets. Only 7% of the oil would be for Quebec, versus 70% to 90% for abroad.
  • Comes with a high risk of spills. The number of leaks in Canadian pipelines has tripled over the past decade.
  • Could deprive millions of people of clean water. A spill could compromise the drinking water supply for communities along the pipeline route. (Did you know that on a daily basis, the tar sands use the same amount of water as a city the size of Montreal?)
  • Will worsen the climate crisis. The tar sands are one of the most polluting industries on the planet. They are the fastest growing source of greenhouse gas emissions in Canada. Alone, the Energy East pipeline project would generate an additional 30 to 32 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions a year. That is the same as adding 7 million cars to our roads.

Take action, sign the petition today.
