The Fondation québécoise pour la protection du patrimoine naturel (FQPPN) has come out against TransCanada's Energy East pipeline, which would cross the St. Lawrence River by the 12 kilometres of shoreline occupied by a nature reserve, Réserve naturelle des Battures-de-Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, owned by the group.
In a recent press release, the group expressed concerns about:
- the negative environmental impacts of tar sands exploitation
- the risk of accidents or incidents that the transportation of this kind of oil by pipeline might pose to the health and safety of residents living en route
More specifically, the group worries that the pipeline might:
- pose a contamination risk to the drinking water for Quebec City and Lévis residents
- endanger sensitive habitats, placing wildlife in peril
