Défi Climat is Quebec's largest awareness-raising and mobilization campaign in the fight against climate change. Modelled on the United Way thermometer, it invites organizations in the public and private sector to mobilize employees and students to reduce their collective greenhouse gas emissions.
In 2010, for example, 1191 organizations alerted more than 784,000 citizens to the importance of carbon footprint-reducing lifestyle changes, and elicited pledges from more than 59,000 citizens to take concrete action to reduce emissions.
Objectives:
- Raise awareness of the role and responsibilities of citizens and businesses in the fight against climate change.
- Create a citizen's movement dedicated to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
- Achieve a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in Quebec.
Défi Climat is a free turnkey campaign for private businesses, public institutions and other organizations. Participating organizations create a committee to elicit pledges from students and employees to take action to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. The environmental benefit of each action is quantified in terms of CO2 emissions savings (in kilograms).
Défi Climat also suggests ways for organizations to improve their carbon footprint. To help them along, Défi Climat provides online resources and applause for their efforts on our website.
A youth program targets students in grades 5, 6 and high school. Educational fact sheets let teachers integrate Défi Climat into their courses and invite students to commit to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions.
