Volunteers from Vélo Services joined residents of Plateau-Manoir-des-Trembles and councillor Maxime Tremblay for a test drive of bike routes to pinpoint problems.
Citizens for Safe Cycling exposes Ottawa biking problems
Since 1984, this entirely volunteer-run organization has helped cyclists in the Ottawa area improve their cycling environment. It created the website www.ottawabikingproblems.ca.
NDG resident Dominique Sorel fights for traffic calming after accident (Montréal)
After a car hit her daughter's stroller, ejecting the child, Dominique Sorel decided to promote pedestrian safety in NDG. She successfully lobbied the borough for such traffic-calming measures as curb extensions, no parking within five metres of an intersection, and traffic lights that give priority to pedestrians.
Environmental group advises city on cycling network (Rosemère) *
When Rosemère held a public hearing on cycling in the city, local environmental group, Enviro-Mille-îles, spoke up.
Citizens get vocal about plans for Turcot Interchange (Montreal)
Mobilisation Turcot brings together community groups, elected officials, concerned citizens and affected organizations to understand the implications of rebuilding the Turcot Interchange. Their goal is to share the results of impact studies with the public, and to speak about Turcot before the Quebec's environmental commission BAPE.
Citizens committee secures better quality of life for residents of St-Jean-Baptiste (Québec) *
St-Jean-Baptiste residents first formed this committee in 1976 to oppose a highway project. Since then, the committee has continued to defend the rights of area residents. It has created social housing, built parks and improved community services.
Citizens of Lévis in favour of public transit *
Faced with probable cuts to their local public transit system, disgruntled users banded together to oppose the decision. They created a Facebook page denouncing the cuts and sent letters to the local papers.
Rock-Forest residents oppose construction of new boulevard (Sherbrooke) *
To relieve traffic congestion on Boulevard Mi-Vallon, the city of Sherbrooke announced plans to build a new 3-km-long, two-lane boulevard, René-Lévesque. Area residents banded together to fight the project. The Coalition Sherbrooke milieu de vie joined in, publishing a petition online.
Committee calls for public transit in Rimouski *
One day in 2009, 400 people took part in a pro-public transit rally in Rimouski. They used free buses for the day to demonstrate the need for a public transit system – even in our smaller cities!
Group demands year-round access to bike paths on the Jacques-Cartier bridge (Longueuil) *
The Vélo 365 collective is a group of organizations dedicated to promoting all-season cycling. In January 2010, it organized a "shovel-in" in Longueuil, to demonstrate that the bike path on the Jacques-Cartier bridge could be accessed 365 days a year if the corporation that owns the bridge would provide snow removal. Approximately 40 people, including some elected officals from the South Shore, shovelled the the section leading to the bike path. They also circulated a petition in favour of keeping the Jacques-Cartier bridge bike path open year round.
