Equiterre stunned by Minister Kent’s declarations regarding greenhouse gas emissions.

Montreal, August 8, 2012 – Equiterre is dismayed by the federal government’s claim that its approach alone accounts for reported reductions in greenhouse gas emissions over the past year. Equiterre wishes to emphasize that the federal government has implemented no measures or action plans and passed no regulations to fight climate change during this period.

“The decline in GHG emissions in Canada is primarily due to actions by the provinces, but also to the application of new accounting rules for forests (forest fires, epidemics, cutting, etc.) in the calculation of Canada’s carbon balance. It has nothing to do with actions by the federal government. The Harper government is taking credit for actions it has not taken, and that is misleading,” declared Steven Guilbeault, Deputy Executive Director of Equiterre.

“Given the record droughts, unprecedented heat waves and dramatic melting of the Greenland ice cap that we are experiencing, the Harper government’s inaction is irresponsible and can only have a detrimental impact on the well-being of our children and grandchildren,” said Steven Guilbeault.
