Buying local is the responsible-consumption behaviour that has progressed the most in Quebec since 2010, and food is at the top of the list of products that Quebecers prefer to buy local, according to the Observatoire de la Consommation Responsable.
In its recent survey of 1100 Quebecers on their food-buying habits, 79.6% of respondents said that they consider the word "local" on a label to be a plus.
There are also local logos such as Aliments du Québec or Québec Vrai on certain local food products.
According to the survey, Quebecers are attracted to local products because of:
- freshness
- taste
- quality
But also out of a desire to:
- support the local economy
- improve their own health
Although most people buy their food in supermarkets, the survey notes that there are other ways to shop, including community supported agriculture (CSA) programs.
