Can I still eat local in the winter?

Published on

According to our Épluche ta ville team, there are lots of ways that you can continue to eat sustainably even in the winter.

Some vegetables are grown in Quebec throughout the year:

  • carrots
  • beets
  • mushrooms
  • cabbage
  • onions
  • leeks
  • turnips
  • apples
  • potatoes

Make sure that your grocery store carries these local products. If they don't already carry them, ask them to start.

You can also order a winter basket from one of the family farmers in Equiterre's community supported agriculture (CSA) network.

When you are shopping, look for the Aliments du Québec label. It is a guarantee that the food you are buying has been grown in Quebec. You can also look for the organic version of this same label.

For a fun way to make healthy food choices in the winter, too, consider joining a community kitchen. For inspiration, check out this video profiling a Plateau community kitchen from the Épluche ta ville web doc series.
