Daycare gardens: Croqu'Plaisir program bears fruit... literally!

Actu - Des jardinets dans les CPE de la région de Sorel-Tracy!

Daycares want to serve the children in their care the freshest food possible. What could be fresher than fruits and vegetables from the daycare's very own garden? Fresh food grown on-site or nearby reduces the distance that food travels and adds nutritional value to the daycare menu. Plus, it is an educational and sensory experience for the children who get to watch the fruits and vegetables grow throughout the season and discover new tastes.

As part of the local procurement component of the Croqu'Plaisir program, Equiterre collaborated with Marché urbain Pierre-De Saurel, a social economy organization created by citizens to increase access to high-quality, locally grown food products. Under the initiative of Marché urbain Pierre-De Saurel, and in collaboration with various local partners, two Sorel-Tracy daycares (CPE Des Marguerites and the Marie-Stella installation of CPE La Marelle) were able to receive support for the creation of shared, collective gardens tended for and harvested by the daycare community.

Each week, children and educators go to the gardens to maintain them and to harvest the fruits and vegetables they have planted. Isabelle, of Marché urbain Pierre-De Saurel, accompanies the groups and teaches them how to care for the gardens and how to harvest. The children enjoy tasting the fruits of their labours. A hands-on educational experience that is perfect for pre-schoolers. Very nice!
