Dirty Dozen – most contaminated produce

Do you sometimes eat organic, sometimes not? Although it's better to eat conventionally grown fruit and vegetables than no fruit and vegetables at all, there are still some choices that you can make to limit your exposure to toxic pesticide residue.

To help shoppers prioritize when to buy organic, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has updated its lists of the most and least contaminated fruit and vegetables:

Researchers performed hundreds of tests, preparing the produce as you would at home – washing apples, peeling carrots, etc.

EWG makes clear that fruit and vegetables are a necessary part of a healthy diet, and that the health benefits of conventionally grown products outweigh the risks, but that doesn't mean that we should just ignore this information, especially in light of recent studies on pesticides and pregnant women and lower IQ in school-age kids.
