Enbridge: Survey shows widespread desire for environmental assessment

Published on

A new SOM survey commissioned by Equiterre indicates that two thirds (64%) of Quebecers would be in favour of an independent environmental assessment by the Quebec government to evaluate the risks of bringing tar sands crude to Quebec. This finding comes as Enbridge seeks permission from the National Energy Board (NEB) to reverse the flow in a section of its Line 9 pipeline and to use it to carry tar sands crude to Montreal.

The survey also shows that more than half of Quebecers (56%) agree with the statement that the production of oil from the tar sands is an environmental disaster. Half of the respondents (52%) also doubt that the oil industry is doing everything it can to reduce the risks.
