Equiterre calls again for moratorium on shale gas exploration and development

Published on

Equiterre has filed a brief with Quebec's environmental review agency calling, once again, for a moratorium on shale gas exploration and development in Quebec.

Equiterre first recommended a moratorium in 2010. In light of recent studies, and the Strategic Environmental Assessment on Shale Gas: knowledge gained and principal findings, Equiterre maintains its position that shale gas is not part of the solution in the fight against climate change.

According to a life cycle assessment (LCA) conducted by the Centre interuniversitaire de recherche sur le cycle de vie des produits, procédés et services (CIRAIG) as part of the strategic environmental assessment, the shale gas industry could increase Quebec's total greenhouse gas emissions by up to 23.2% per year.*
