Greenhouse gas emissions on the decrease in Quebec

Published on

In 2009, Quebec greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions decreased by 2.5% as compared with 1990, according to the Quebec Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment and Parks in its latest inventory of greenhouse gas emissions. *

But Quebec still has a long way to go if it is to achieve its goal of a 6% reduction in emissions by 2012 as compared with 1990.

The greatest challenges? Transportation and urban planning. Transportation alone could undermine all the gains in GHG reductions made in other sectors.

Equiterre reminds the Quebec government of the need to invest heavily in public transport, and cites the proposed Metropolitan Land Use and Development Plan for Greater Montreal as a step in the right direction.
