The Ontario College of Family Physicians is recommending that patients reduce their exposure to pesticides whenever and wherever possible. This recommendation is based on its new research review, which shows a link between exposure to pesticides and various neurological and respiratory diseases, as well as reproductive problems.
It also shows that children are particularly vulnerable to the pesticide exposure that occurs before birth.
The College urges the public to watch out for certain common pesticides, including
- glyphosate
- pyrethrins
- atrazine
Several provinces and many municipalities have already banned the use of various pesticides. The Ontario College of Family Physicians supports continuing with such bans.
Quebec is currently revising its Pesticides Management Code. Let's make sure that the revisions to the Code go far enough. The new code must include tougher regulations for cosmetic pesticides. At the very least, we shouldn't be allowing pesticides that have been banned in other provinces to be used in Quebec.
