Think organic produce costs too much?

In an effort to provide its family farmers with a comparison of market prices, for the past 12 years, Équiterre has recorded the price of fruits and vegetables on three separate occasions during the summer.

An overview of the last four years shows the following trends:

  • The average Équiterre family farmer organic basket costs on average 28% less than the equivalent amount of organic fruits and vegetables in a grocery store.
  • In 2015, the average organic basket cost less—7.25% less on average—than the equivalent amount of non-organic fruits and vegetables in a supermarket.

Although the price of conventional vegetables increased by 14% in 2015 and the price of fruits by 11%, which led many Canadians to buy fewer fruits and vegetables, it’s clear that when you buy directly from a family farmer you pay a very reasonable price for fresh local organic vegetables and contribute to the viability of small local organic farms.
