TransCanada, the company behind the controversial Keystone XL project, announced this summer that it would proceed with its Energy East Pipeline project. The company plans to convert an existing pipeline to carry crude oil from Alberta and Saskatchewan to Ontario, and to build a new pipeline from Cornwall, Ontario to Saint John, New Brunswick. The project would bring 1.1 million barrels of crude oil per day through nine regions of Quebec. Some of the crude oil would come from the tar sands.
