To reduce the amount of packaging on our food

Published on

The zero waste trend has largely been driven by individuals in recent years. Now the time has come for food retailers and governments to work harder at reducing the amount of packaging on food - to make zero waste shopping easier for consumers.

There are three main fronts to reduce food packaging:

  1. Limit packaging as much as possible

  2. Consume and buy in bulk

  3. Prioritize reusable containers

According to Équiterre’s latest study on food packaging, a significant amount of the population has already started transitioning toward zero waste, and is quite willing to do more to reduce the amount of food packaging generated by their grocery purchases. The supply just needs to follow the demand. Food retailers and the food industry must seize this opportunity.

Food retailers can take action on the three main fronts listed above to accelerate the zero waste trend. Imagine how fast we could move forward if a large grocery chain began offering a serious supply of zero waste products in its stores!

Between fiction and reality – Launch of our report on zero waste

The results of Équiterre’s new report on zero waste among food retailers will be unveiled at an event that combines culture and science. Using excerpts from the web-series Vidanges, our panelists will exchange ideas on how to facilitate the transition of Canada’s food sector toward a better supply of zero waste products.

The discussion will look at such issues as overpackaging and food waste, as well as Équiterre’s recommendations for our governments and for the industry.
