More about the Vélovolt campaign

Published on

Currently, 78% of Quebecers use their cars to get to work, even though a third of them live fewer than 5 kilometres from where they work. In this type of situation, the Electrically Assisted Bike (EAB) represents a real opportunity to change the way people get around.

The goal of the Vélovolt campaign is to demonstrate that trips normally made by car can be made by EAB. With this in mind, Équiterre has, since 2021, been organizing EAB trials in co-operation with a number of Quebec organizations in order to better understand the potential offered by this mode of transportation.

Various organizations tell us about their experience

See testimonials from some of the Vélovolt participating organizations.

Isabelle Jobin, Vélovolt Coordinator at IUCPQ

"The Vélovolt campaign fit in perfectly with the Institute's sustainable mobility action plan. Participants really enjoyed the experience, and that prompted many of them to continue commuting to work by bicycle. The trial is ending on a highly enthusiastic note and with a first step toward a modal shift on the part of the staff."

Michel Bélanger, Sustainable Development Advisor, Cégep de Sherbrooke

"The EAB trials created instant excitement. With these trials, we wanted to test a mode of transportation that is perfectly suited to the reality of Sherbrooke—a city of hills! The availability of secure bike shelters for our community is one of the keys to the adoption of these bikes and we plan to increase the number of spaces in order to ensure that there are enough places for all future new cyclists.”

Mélissa Magny, Vélovolt Coordinator, CJE Trois-Rivières/MRC des Chenaux

"Our participation in the Vélovolt campaign enabled our members to contribute to a greener environment and show that we can make a difference through simple, concrete and fun actions. The participants were unanimous in stating that the experience was positive, that they had more energy at work, were in better mood and felt a sense of pride. It was all positive!”

“An electrically assisted bike project, such as the Vélovolt Project, is likely to have beneficial health effects, both for the cyclist and for the environment."

Dr. Yves Lacasse, Pneumonologist at the Institut universitaire de cardiologie et de pneumologie de Québec, Université Laval. The IUCPQ hosted Velovolt trials in Spring 2022.
