Anticosti residents take issue with François Legault's comments on oil

Published on

In response to Coalition Avenir Québec Leader François Legault's statement that "the 240 inhabitants of Anticosti Island" support oil exploration on the island, and that only a few deer would oppose, made on March 16 on the popular television show, Tout le monde en parle, 48 residents have signed a press release marking their opposition to the project.

The press release says: "We wish to inform Quebecers that this statement is false and insulting. Be certain that there are not only two deer who oppose the arrival of this unsustainable industry on Anticosti. The vast majority of Anticosti residents believe that that sustainable future – and that of Quebec – will not be accessed via the oil industry."

It goes on to say: "At no time have we been consulted in any way whatsover about the plans for oil on Anticosti, by the Quebec government or by the municipal council. No one has presented the risks to us, the known dangers or benefits of fracking."
