Greater Montreal takes baby steps against urban sprawl

The government of Quebec has officially approved a new Metropolitan Land Use and Development Plan for the Montreal Metropolitan Community.

The plan – perhaps best known by its French acronym PMAD – establishes environmental and transportation guidelines until 2031 for residential, industrial and commercial development. (Did you know the area expects to accommodate 320,000 new households in that time?)

This plan is good news for the people of Greater Montreal. It is a mini-revolution in our approach to land use and transportation.

Now we just have to make sure that it is properly implemented...
