To mark the launch of a new study titled “The Rise of Light-Duty Trucks in Canada: Reversing the Trend“ on the increase in fuel-inefficient vehicles in the Canadian fleet, Équiterre hosted a webinar in order to present the results.

In 2020, light-duty trucks, which include sport utility vehicles (SUVs), pickup trucks and vans, accounted for 79.9% of new vehicles sold in Canada, a disturbing record that has been broken annually for about a decade. The harmful consequences of this trend on the environment, on public health and on the economy are becoming more and more obvious.

Équiterre, in collaboration with Polytechnique Montréal, CIRANO and HEC Montréal, unveiled the results of a comprehensive study exploring the growing preference of Canadians for gas-guzzling, oversized vehicles. The webinar offered an overview of the causes and consequences of this alarming trend, as well as motivations for consumer choices and potential solutions.
